Website & Forum Support / Temporary Forum Registration Change
« on: January 25, 2018, 12:19:07 AM »
I've disabled self-activation for new accounts as we seem to have attracted the attention of Russian spam accounts today. This will continue until the flood abates.

In the meantime, all new accounts will need to go through admin approval for activation.

Will advise when things are back to normal.

NBT Official Announcements / NBT-MWO Launch Update
« on: August 28, 2017, 08:31:44 AM »
First, thank you all for your interest in NBT, and for your considerable patience! NBT is not just a website and league automation, it's (primarily, and first and foremost) a community of like-minded teams and individuals who have come together for the common goal of having fun playing the game in a competitive, role-play-based environment -- and it looks like we have a really good group again this time!

We are close to being able to start live fire. A couple of factions are finishing their setup, and once they are done, we'll be ready.

What will happen?

Factions will be turned loose from the setup sandbox and will have full freedom to move about the galaxy. This includes launching raids, one or two of which typically will be required in order to be able to launch assaults. Factions should also be able to place orders for resources, including mechs, dropships, industry upgrades, and (for those who manufacture them) jumpships.

At this point, the NBT automation is still under development; we literally are laying down the tracks in front of the rolling train, and as such, hiccups are expected. We do not anticipate any catastrophic failures, but as with any software system, once it is in the hands of actual users, the unanticipated does happen. Therefore we ask that you bear with us for the first few days while issues are resolved, and treat the first week or two of activity as a "soft launch" or "beta" period.

Note that if something does happen that wipes out the entire database, we will have a snapshot from the launch point and can always return to that, so no one's setup data would be lost.

When will this happen?

Sometime this week (it's looking like Wednesday), we will set everyone active and you can begin moving things around and launching attacks.

Once we have an actual, specific day and time, another brief announcement will be made containing that update. If you are not already, you may want to lurk in the NBT Discord channel ( to get the latest as it happens.

You said (or the rules said) "Feature X" was included, but I don't see it. What gives?

As mentioned, the automation is being constructed as we speak and work will continue to bring up all systems discussed in the ruleset. However, rather than force everyone to wait a few more weeks before we start, we have decided to strike a balance between having the "complete" system in place, and having a league with no functionality. The automation systems and interfaces that will be online when activity begins are deemed the basics necessary for league launch. In general, given the typical pace of play in NBT, many or most of these "missing" systems are not critical at launch and would be in place by the time they are actually needed.

At launch, everyone will be provided with a list of items mentioned in the rules that are not present yet, and a general estimate for when they would become available. In some cases, "manual" methods will be substituted temporarily for the automated systems (for instance, Clan Trials and mercenary hiring); for others, the systems or features simply will not be available until they are rolled out in the automation (for instance, spies).

Thank you all again for your patience, we're nearly there!

NBT Official Announcements / NBT-MWO Signups Are Underway
« on: July 18, 2017, 04:21:12 PM »
I have put the NBT public site and automation into "signup" mode. For the next month or so, you can apply for factions in the upcoming NBT-MWO league. The signup process is straighforward:

  • Go to, click the "Play!" link at the top, which will scroll you down the page
  • Click the NBT:MWO logo to go to the automation interface
  • Register an account with the automation
  • Click the Factions item in the top nav bar, fill out the application form and then click "Apply" next to the faction you wish to occupy

That's all it takes!

If you experience any problems or issues with anything regarding the site or the automation interface, let me know and I will dig into it right away. I've done as much testing as I can on my own but this is the first time that everyone else gets to bash on it and I can almost guarantee issues, considering how new it is.

Also, if you have any comments or suggestions about the look-and-feel or the aesthetics of the site and automation, let me know that too -- I am a software developer, not a graphic designer, so my "make it look good" skills are lacking. ;)

NBT Official Announcements / NBT-MWO Signups Begin July 18th
« on: July 10, 2017, 11:10:24 AM »
(also posted in MWO forums)

Faction signups for the NetBattleTech MWO league will open on July 18th (with the Civil War patch) and continue at least through the August patch.

I had originally planned to have the league running on the 18th, but due to the nature of setting up a faction in NBT and the strong likelihood of a significant set of balance changes to the new Civil War weapons and mechs in the August patch, I decided that it would be better if teams did not spend a ton of time setting up their factions and getting the league underway, only to have to reset a month into the league.

So what will happen on July 18th? Representatives for teams interested in joining the league will be able to register with the NBT automaton on that day, and indicate the faction(s) in which they are interested. Note that this is not a first-come-first-served proposition -- we will be spending much more time considering faction assignment this time than we did in the "alpha", in the interests of map, competitive and geographic balance. This is an additional reason we want a month to allow signups. Understand, though, that you won't have to wait a month to hear anything -- the map setup will be dynamic during the signup period and as teams express interest in the league and in particular factions, we may juggle things around and this will require regular contact between NBT Admins and the applicants.

It is important to understand that factions will be filled in a certain order; it is imperative that we have reliable teams in the Major House and Major Clan factions prior to start; no other factions will be filled until this happens. The reason for this is that the foundation of any successful NBT league lies in these factions being fully active at all times. Therefore we will not be filling applications for Minor Clans, Mercenaries, Pirates or Periphery Kingdoms until these major factions are filled and active.

Currently, the only specifics about the league itself are expressed in the draft ruleset we would like to start with. Those rules are posted (in rough form, in terms of presentation) on the NBT website:

Between now and the 18th, I will be adding additional data, such as the starting map (it will be a 3062 timeline, with potential slight customizations and deviations from canon as needed to fit the applicant pool) and rules corrections/clarifications.

Any questions anyone may have about anything NBT-related, please post on the NBT Forums (preferred) or here in this thread (may experience a delay in response time).

Thank you for your consideration, and may your victories be many!

Website & Forum Support / Bug: Stealth Recon Reports
« on: November 02, 2015, 04:34:48 PM »
The automation is not sending these when you get an undetected recon, so while I am looking into it, please contact myself or Tundra Wolf when you do not get a report in email immediately (except for those with Microsoft-hosted email accounts, as detailed in another thread).

Website & Forum Support / Fixed: jumpship purchasing
« on: October 01, 2015, 01:45:37 PM »
I have enabled the factions with jumpship purchase ability, as described in the rules here.

I have also removed the confusing "Purchase Vehicles" button from the factory purchase page.

Automation Development / UI Request: Login Component
« on: September 24, 2015, 09:28:49 PM »

In short, the basic security mechanism that any site needs. It should be created as a Component in AngularJS.

If you are interested, please ask questions here or in that Issue thread.

Automation Development / Crowdsourcing development of the new NBT client(s)
« on: September 24, 2015, 09:26:43 PM »
Hello all

If you are interested in helping develop the new NBT automation interface, I am not going to lie and say I can't use the help. ;)

I will organize the work from the NBT Github account (, where the client code will be publicly available.

If you would like to help, you will need a Github account (so you can clone the codebase) and a webserver you can run locally (this should be available on any Windows, Linux or Mac desktop).

Changes to the codebase will be via Github "pull request" so you will probably want to clone the NBT client repo into your own Github account, and then clone your clone to your local machine. Then you can push to your own repo and create pull requests from those when you are ready for new features/functionality to be reviewed for addition.

For the web-based UI, you will need to know at least HTML, CSS, JS and AngularJS (

I will post needs as Issues on that repo, and also post here when new ones are created.

As the subject states. There is nothing I can do about this.

If you use Hotmail,, (or any Microsoft-hosted email service) or AT&T ( or sbcglobal) and want to receive emails from NBT, you need to contact your email provider and tell them to unblock emails from

Yahoo, Gmail and other services do not seem to be affected.

Website & Forum Support / Disabled: roster email
« on: September 16, 2015, 11:48:06 AM »
I have disabled sending emails to a unit roster from the automation's Roster Comm Center feature. It is broken in ways I do not have time to diagnose at the moment, and I believe it is responsible for Microsoft- and AT&T-hosted email services putting us on their blacklists.

Note that means until we are off those services' blacklists, you will not get email from NBT automation (or these forums) if you use,, (or any MS-hosted email) or or (the only two AT&T-hosted services from which I have received NDRs).

Additionally, if you are in the habit of just deleting NBT automation emails (and the automation is CHATTY, there is no doubt) without reading them (using their web interfaces anyway) then they will interpret that as "these messages are spam" which will increase the likelihood of making it to their blacklists (MS seems very quick on the trigger for this sort of thing).

If you feel you are getting too many emails from NBT, and have not set up a filter to direct them to folders instead of littering your inbox, then please let me know (here in this thread is fine) and we will see about implementing some form of "opt-out" instead.

But currently, what this means is, if you depend on NBT emails to know about attacks, and you are on one of these services, you will NOT be getting these emails, and there is absolutely zero I can do about it.

Website & Forum Support / Fixed: factory production
« on: September 13, 2015, 08:26:38 PM »
You should have mechs now, where you expect to have them. If anyone is seeing 0 production for a factory slot that is actually making something (and it's 0 not because someone bought it out), then let me know.

Website & Forum Support / Starmap Features: Terrain maps and Symbol key
« on: September 09, 2015, 09:48:20 AM »
Found out where the listing of maps for a given terrain class can be found: open a "detail" map view (the one that has the distances, planet names, terrain, etc., on the right) and click the Terrain column header.

Likewise, to see what all of those symbols mean in the Keys column, click the Keys header.

These are so intuitively placed, I can't believe that I didn't know they were there...  ::)

BTW the other headers simply resort that list.

Website & Forum Support / Fixed: Zoomed-out starmap colors
« on: September 08, 2015, 10:30:56 PM »
They should now reflect the state of the map, rather than "something else".
