Jarnfolk host the DC ambassador
« on: October 05, 2017, 01:05:38 AM »
Cainen paced the wooded floor of the meeting room inside the diplomatic shuttle he had taken. The small liner orbited the planet of Kamarod, awaiting for the arrival of the Dragon's ambassador. The warm light helped ease his eyes but his mind lay heavy. Reports from the Jarnfolk homeworld told of the arrival of mercenaries from deep space. The Jarl called upon the militia forces to man any weapon the could. The planetary garrison manned their kit foxes and the other few mechs left behind to fight the enemy mercenaries. The ISENGRIM, the main expeditionary fleet was too far away to intervene.

Intelligence reports had traced the source of this raid as paid mercenaries to the Magistracy of Canopus. Out of cowardice and malice they payed the Wanna's Widowmakers mercenary company a fee to attack the homeworlds. His blood boiled at the thought. Over the last few days the Magistracy of Canopus had sent taunts via HPG messages to them. They were ignored, of course. If was beneath the Jarnfolk to answer such empty hostility and be goaded into an ill timed attack.

News tends to spread quick. Within hours of the attack he was order by Jarl Dane to board the diplomatic shuttle bound for the territory of the Draconis Combine. He received his briefing in flight as to save time for the trip. This would be the most important diplomatic mission he had been a part of.

The first officer snapped him out of his daze. "Sir we have an approaching vessel carrying the marks of a Draconis Combine ambassador ship. They are requesting permission to dock".

" Allow them to do so and make haste" .

Robert Tanaka had been ambassador to the JàrnFòlk for the past six months. While it was the Shogun, Hiro Kurita, who had announced the signing of the DCJF Treaty, it was Robert who had toiled and deliberated with the deep Periphery denizens to finally reach an accord.

He actually quite liked the JàrnFòlk. Unlike a Draconian, they would say what they meant and meant what they said. Although, contact with the Jarl had remained minimal, most of the talks had been through one of his most trusted Heralds, Cainen.

"You could show a little enthusiasm." The ambassador gleamed at the man sitting opposite him in the shuttlecraft.

He was a short man, no more than five-foot four with a slender physique and a katana strapped to his waist. On the left collar of his DCMS uniform was the insignia for a MechWarrior with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel or Chu-sa.

The officer glared back at the Ambassador without saying a word.

"We've completed docking sequence sirs." The pilot announced to his passengers.

"Well," Robert eagerly hopped from his seat. "Let's go say hello"

Cainen thought it impolite to have ambassador Robert Tanaka come aboard and not be greeted by him personally. He looked around the meeting to ensure the decor, sake, and delicacy, was in place for when they would return to the room. Cainen left his ceremonial pistol back in his quarters. Greeting the ambassador with a weapon would be a "faux pas". He took his security officer with him whom carried his own ceremonial pistol as protocol would dictate.

They left for the lower deck to greet the diplomatic mission from the Draconis Combine. Banners of the Jarnfolk and the Draconis Combine hung from the walls of the gangway entrance. Two worlds would meet as one today, and Cainen, with the help of his staff, strove to ensure the scenery would reflect that.

When the Kuritan diplomat would step onto the receiving room Caienen and his staff would bow as practiced. He had come to respect the customs of the combine and their culture. They strived for inner growth and martial prowess to there given occupation. When they put their mind to some they commit to it with all their will.

He smiled and gave a polite bow.

"Kon'nichiwa taishi Tanaka-san".

Robert continued to stare blankly at the Herald for several seconds. His head twisted towards the banners on the wall.

"Not bad," He mumbled. "You seem to know your manners; for a disgusting pirate."

The MechWarrior accompanying him shifted his eyes between Cainen and the security officer at his side. The room fell silent for several seconds.

Suddenly, the ambassador burst out laughing. "Cainen, you old dog! it's good to see you again." He extended his hand in friendship.

Robert Tanaka was not your typical Draconian. He had spent more than half his life traveling across the Successor and Periphery States, acclimatizing himself to the different cultures and customs. His adaptability had made him a prime candidate for diplomatic relations.

"You know, this is all so unnecessary." He said as he looked around the meeting room. "We could've just sat around a table drinking that nasty homebrew you brought with you last time. You know I can't remember half of what we discussed during our last meeting?"

The Lieutenant-Colonel standing next to him cleared his throat as if expecting an introduction.

It was as if Robert had just realized he was there. "Oh! This stick in the mud is Chu-sa Takeshi Ida, he's been assigned to me as DCMS liaison." The stoic soldier gave Cainen the slightest of nods. "Don't mind his stone-hard exterior. He's been that way since we were kids."
Ida said nothing.

Cainen was completely caught off guard by Robert's initial mannerisms. He gave a hearty laugh and shook Robert's hand.

"Likewise my friend. It has been too long".

Cainen found comfort in Robert's adaptability with culture. The Draconis Combine had clearly sent their best man for the job. Robert's commentary caught a twinkle in his eye.

"The meeting comes at an important time in our relations. Couldn't risk coming across as half-assed. I might have something that would surprise you later".

Cainen diverted his attention to the newly introduced Chu-sa. He observed Ida and returned the nod to him. "Your friend sure seems like a lively one". He laughed.

"Where are my manners". Cainen gestured attention to the man at his side. "This is my head of security detail for today, wrecca officer Thorin Sezneg. He's usually in the cockpit of a mech. A fine mechwarrior and a good friend".

Sezneg smiled warmly and nodded to the Draconian group. " Nice to meet everyone here".

"Now if you would follow me I would have a better place to conduct our meeting at than in this old dingy gangway. I've have a far better location we we can talk".

Cainen gestured that they follow him. They had walked from their initial area to the meeting room.

"Have a seat and make yourselves comfortable. You mentioned that homebrew..."

Cainen produced from the fridge a corked glass bottle and some chilled glasses.

"This one is from Hoffn. Legend has it that they first came up with this brew from the piss of the Great Bear-Wolves and the hops of the Ceres plains that were fertilized with virgins blood. Of course that's just a legend".

He poured them all a glass of grog. He raised his glass to make a toast.

"To the Dragon, and good friends".

Ida raised his glass but did not drink.

"'Likes to keep all his sense clear, this one." Robert winked at the Herald. " Me on the other hand..."
The ambassador quickly downed his drink, swiped the Lieutenant-Colonel's and downed that one as well. Takeshi scowled at his impropriety.

" I can definitely taste the bear-wolf piss." He almost coughed up a lung. "So, I hear Hofn's about to be hit. Things must be a bit tense back home."

"The Windowmaker's," His DCMS liaison added. "This isn't some reserve battalion you'll be catching with their pants down. They're battle-hardened and well trained; not to be underestimated. I wasn't there, but I lost friends on Quentin because that mistake was made."

"The first words out of your mouth this whole trip and you manage to kill the entire damn mood." Robert stared at him incredulously. "You're unbelievable Ta-kun."

Cainen had to keep drink from spilling out his nose. There was laughter from around the room.

Cainen downed his drink and winced. "Only the finest from the periphery will do". He cleared his threat to ease the burning sensation.

Cainen nodded towards Ida and frowned at the mention of the widowmakers. " I worry about the outcome at home as well. It's been on my mind the whole day". He pause and took a gulp of his drink. "Sorry about your friends".

Cainen chuckled at Robert's affectionate use of Ida's name. It shows that they had been friends for a long time. His own friendship with Sezneg was shorter in duration but Cainen none the less felt he could trust him with his life. Sezneg was about to pour himself another shot when Cainen raised an eyebrow in his direction. Sezneg took it as a que to remember that he was on the job. There would be time for drinking later.

" I'm sure the garrison will put up a good fight. The men back home don't have much to work with but they'll be prepared".

The table intercom light flashed brightly. Cainen pressed the button and answered. " Yes what is it"?

"We've detected the jumpship in system. Your other guests are on their way".

"Thank you, carry on bridge officer". Cainen closed the call and turned to his Draconus delegates.

" I hope you don't mind some Capellan company".

Diplomat Gonta's shuttle docked alongside the  Jarnfolk ship. He strode inside with his detail and was escorted to the meeting room.

He appeared in a brown military uniform with a splash of dark green Liao colours. At the front of the belt was a leather bag and behind the tanto sword, on the collar it was possible to distinguish the silver triangle insignia of Sang-Shao.

Colonel bowed respectfully and said with a Russian accent:
“Greetings emissaries!
I thank Jarn for the invitation, I have for him a present from the commander of Liao military forces.”
The colonel opened the bag that hung on his belt, and took out an exquisite glass bottle with clear liquid and handed it to Jarn - “This is the best vodka from Tikonov, hope Jarn will enjoy it.”

Cainen welcomed the Liao emissary. He took notice of the slavic features of the man, and his Russian accent. He accepted the gift of Vodka and looked it over.

"Thank you for the gift. The Jarl will enjoy this, but I'm sure he won't mind if we have a bit in the process" Cainen laughed.

"Take a seat, I was just about to get to the point of why I wanted to gather us here today".

Cainen sat on one side of the table. He gave pause to allow for the attention to fall on him.

" I've called for this meeting to discuss the future. There is much uncertainty, but one would agree that less uncertainty, especially from our nations, is better. Today I want us to solidify our comradeship and going forward I want us to build a better tomorrow for our nations. To such an extent the Jarnfolk want to invest in both Capellan and Draconis industries, in particular your war industries. The purchasing of mechs and open trade between our nations will strengthen our economies and lead to prosperity. This will be the bi-frost between our realms”.

He cleared his throat before continuing,

“ We view you as ardent allies and respect your strength. We should help our nations in times of crisis, and defending one another from those that would see us fed to the crows. To such an extent I would propose that we would allow each other to defend a planet's garrison when they are under attack, and repel invaders that would see fit to undermine our coalition. There are many out in the galaxy that are eager see us fail. This would be a full military alliance between us. We would join each other in military campaigns should the need for war ever arise”.

Cainen filled his cup with grog once again, but did not drink. He studied the faces of those in the room with attention and patience.

The colonel sank into a soft chair:

"That's why I'm here.
Our alliance will benefits. As they say in my Tikonov  homeland - Slab otdelno kazhdy prutik, a whole broom can not be broken!
Maskirovka reports strength increasing of our common enemies. We can miss the moment when they become stronger than us and it will be too late for us to unite.
Chancellor promise to open space and charging stations for alliance. Mech factories for the production in the required quantity will also be singled out.
The only point is we ask not to attack the Free Worlds League, because we have concluded trade and military extinguishing with Marik House and in case of its violation we will guarantee the security of the western borders. What will the Great Dragon say?

Robert hadn't said a word since the Colonel walked in. He sat quietly with a small smirk on his face, staring at his drink as he swirled the liquid inside his cup. It was rare for the ambassador to be genuinely caught off-guard.

"The Coordinator will be pleased to hear of House Liao's commitment to such a relationship." He spoke softly. "And he will be most grateful to the JàrnFòlk for being the bridge between our two great houses. Let us drink... To new friends."

Takeshi once again raised his cup but did not drink and this time, Robert did not steal it from him. Instead his old friend put a hand on his shoulder and smiled.

Things were falling into place; the MechWarrior could see it. He had vehemently fought against being assigned to his former classmate and had requested a transfer on multiple occasions since becoming his liaison. Now, he realized why Robert had been so adamant about having him there. The two of them were about to make history and there was no place else the Lieutenant-Colonel would rather be.

Cainen nodded at colonel Gonta. "We see no need at the current time to pursue hostilities with the Free Worlds League of House Marik".

Cainen smiled to Robert and Ida. " To the best of of friends. To new nations seeking peace and stability. Long live this Iron Oath Alliance".

The grog went down smoother this time. He did not wince. The burning was far less intrusive. In a way it was smoothing. He already began to feel the lull in his senses. He cleared his throat.

"This agreement will now allow allied factory purchases from one another, allied garrisoning with the intend to defend planets or for staging ground that involve strategic value, and, should the need arise, the ability to launch joint assaults. I've taken care of the documentation part of things. With your signatures this will be solidified. I've already added mine".

A beeping from his datapad distracted him. He has set it to sleep mode for the meeting. There were only two ways for it to awaken, for it to be turned on, or to received a priority message via hpg of critical importance. It was the latter, and his face soured. Reports came from Hoffn of the battle results against the Widowmakers. The capital had been defended but their defense forces were spread too thin. The few militia on Trondheim where routed and the planet was sacked. The body count was not completed but so far several hundered thousand lay dead from the attack. Now a second attack wave was reported incoming, this time recon revealed that the unit carried the markings of Wolf's Dragoons. Cainen rubbed his temples. what few kitfox mechs were left or coming off the production line would have to contend with another force of hardened mercenaries.

His heart sank. "What can we do against such reckless hate"?

He took an audible breath. " My appologies gentilemen for being distracted during this time of celibration".

He paused breifly. "Another wave of mercenaries is incoming on our homeworlds".

The colonel relived the memory of the betrayal of Pavel Ridzik:

"Tikonov is occupied by Federated Sun. Hope Hofn will not suffer the same fate. Let's work hard so that will never happen!"

With these words, the Sang-shao signed an agreement.

October 23rd 3062
Jumpship TDJ-Golden Hind in orbit of Gabrie 3.

Chaos ensues on the bridge of the Hind.
FedSun Aerospace fighters coming in for another run Commander the Comsman yelled.
Brace for impact boys, Is The Captain on board yet! The ship lurched from the strike.
Captain Firearrow and Private Tiyos entered the bridge in a full run.  Are the drives ready for jump Commander yelled Fire.  Almost we need another minute or two he replied but Hull damage is now 90% sir we can’t take another hit like that.  The Comsman warned the deck, “We’ve got another batch of fighters incoming”! Tiyos glanced over at Fire. “Are we going to make it?” Fire replied “They sure don’t want us to get this data to the Jarnfolk do they kid. Takes a special kind of scum to attack a jumpship.” The drives are ready Captain the helmsman yelled!  Punch it get us out of here!

October 25th 3062

Fire sat in his office on the Hind staring at the data chip on his desk when Tiyos walked in.  “We just jumped into the Kamarod system sir.” Thanks for the heads up private Fire replied. He then picked up the chip and showed it to Tiyos.  “I hope we’re doing the right thing here.  Whats on this chip could very well set the Periphery on fire if not the Inner Sphere. Once this gets out Tortuga is going to be a target for these fools and we’re going to need to be ready.”  Tiyos replied “Sir judging from the number of ships here hopefully we’ll have allies in this. As it stands right now in addition to the Isengrim ship a Draconis Combine and a Capellen ship are docked as well”.  Fire’s eyes perked up with worry. “Capellen? Damn. Do we know who they sent”?  “It looks like a TCAF ship sir Tiyos replied” Fire sighed in relief “Well thank goodness they sent the honorable unit to handle these talks.” The Combine would make great allies for us. Did you hear they started taking space back from the clans? It’s pretty impressive what they’ve accomplished in the last few months. Fire stood up and took a sip of the rum sitting on his desk.  Alright let's do this.  Grab the case of Tortuga rum in the corner over there and lets get to the Isengrim ship.

Fire and Tiyos stepped onto the Isengrim ship and were meet by an officer. Welcome to Kamarod gentleman the meeting has already begun, right this way.  As they made their way into the meeting room Fire heard the following comment.   “How did Canopis afford these Mercs anyway. They’re seasoned vets, not fly by night merc incorporated and their prices for service reflect that.  They hardly should have been able to afford one much less two.” Perhaps I can answer that question.”Fire said as they walked into the room.  Sorry we’re late Cainen we got held up due to the FedSun launching a raid on our Gabrie sector. We almost didn’t make it out of the system. We have a gift for the delegates in the room. Tiyos passed the rum and after a brief introduction Fire plugged the data chip in and Video came up on screen of two men standing in the UPTO Embassy Building.

Gentleman, the following videos were taken by one of our diplomats before Tortuga pulled out of the UPTO negotiations.  The man on your left is Ray Razor the MOC diplomat, on the Right Puggs Hunter the Outworlds diplomat.  “Play video”.

Razor: I’m still going to work a deal with Widowmakers.  I wanted to secure Wolf's Dragoons before Dane did.  He was trying to secure contract with them last night or beginning conversations to do so.  We can work up needed resources to meet contract requirements.  I’m not going to pressure anyone in that regard, it's voluntary

Puggs:  I’m not sure how much Outworlds can do, but we’re in I know that much.

“End Video”
The video ended and the next one popped up on screen.  “The following video was taken a few days later. Between Razor and Chief Outworlds Diplomat Naterist”
“Go ahead and Play”

Razor:  I’m going to let everything they say from this point forward flounder without reply.

Naterist:
Same
Also Davion wants to help fight the Jarl.  Do I ask them to help buy mercs or what?
They actually brought it up this time?
“The Video cuts out”

Esteemed representatives, the fact that the MOC is saying they alone put forth these Mercs is a lie. At the least Outworlds was involved in funding and at best Davion assisted as well. It's possible the other members helped with funding but that's speculation at this time. The fact of the matter is they didn’t do this alone, and for the rest of the UTPO states to claim ignorance is laughable at best.  I don’t know what's worse, being cowards and hiring someone else to do the fight for you or lying that you didn’t know what was going on when you were helping finance the whole endeavor.

Cainen your Jarl has been insisting we join you for months. We wish we had been able to get this information to you sooner. So to make up for that folly we offer over full access to our territories along with garrison rights and offer an alliance to help defend one another as needed.  To the honorable Combine and Capellen Reps in the room we offer the same.

Cainen barely had time to process what had been going on when Fire and Tiyos stormed into the room. He had his staff distribute the refreshments while the two setup the video to play.

By the end of it Cainen shook his head. " It seems that this confirms that our suspicions were true".

He looked to the two men and then to the room. " If anyone here is against the decision to make the Tortuga a part of this alliance i would recommend that you speak out now".

After some silence Cainen turns to the two. "The Toruga will have the full protection and support of the Iron Oath Alliance. Given the evidence produced and the dangerous journey that was taken to get here I cann't ignore your plight. I hereby declare that the Tortuga are now an official part of the Iron Oath Alliance".

He cleared his throat. " I must conclude this meeting here gentlemen as there is much work to be done. We will keep in contact. I ask that you prepare yourselves and your forces".

He turned to then visible window in the room and stared into the stars.

"The storm is coming".

[all political levels of Liao and Tortuga should be at +5]
