The Skinny Monkey Bar
10/02/3062

Crash woke to a fearsome pounding in his head, accompanied by a sharp pain that felt like an ice pick slowly being inserted into his right eye. Despite the agony, he forced his eyes the rest of the way open, seeing a dark wood-paneled ceiling lit by a few dim glowstrips. Part of the pounding in his head turned out to be from the throb of deep bass music thumping from a towering stack of speakers against one wall.

Memory slowly returned; this was an after-action party thrown by two OWA battlemech regiments. They were celebrating a successful raid on the Capellan Confederation in which a single OWA pilot had downed seven enemy mechs. As the new liaison officer from the Eridani Light Horse, Crash had been invited to what turned out to be an extremely wild night.

Crash slowly sat up, pressing the palm of one hand over his eyes to block out the dim light, then felt hands grip him tightly under each arm and lift him to his feet. The bar was filled with laughing and drinking mechwarriors, some wearing RSOR insignia and others with Ghost of Nox collar flashes. A wide assortment of women, almost universally cute and extremely drunk hung from pretty much every warriors' arm and a few more were sprawled on a couch and the floor in one corner.

Shouting to be heard over the music, one of the guys helping Crash to his feet leaned in and said "Hey man, wake up it's time to party some more!"

Crash mumbled an acknowledgement, looking over at the man to his left. "Yeah, thanks".

"No problem brother!" shouted the smiling OWA warrior. "Here take this!" With that he pressed a bright blue drink in a clear glass into Crash's hand.

Nodding thanks, Crash raised the glass to his lips and took a deep swallow... then coughed and nearly choked as the potent beverage went off like an atom bomb in his stomach.

The mechwarrior at his other side laughed and cheerfully slapped a hand between his shoulder blades to help with the coughing fit. "Good shit right?"

Crash tried to smile manfully and managed to wheeze out "Yeah, definitely - you guys really know how to party!"

Suddenly a piercing whistle cut through the roaring music and laughter - then every single OWA pilot in the room looked at each other once and stampeded for the door. Glass shattered as the men gulped down the remainder of their drinks and tossed the emptied glasses over a shoulder. Instantly forgotten, the party girls were left alone at the bar or on the floor as their dates poured out of the room in a rush, half-carrying the inebriated ELH liaison officer with them.

Preliminary Report: Outworlds Alliance Military

Digest: Familiarization and advisory operations with OWA military units based on Alpheratz are off to a solid start. Alliance Military HQ assigned me to work with two of their notable 'mech regiments; Ghost of Nox and RSOR. Both units demonstrate an impressive level of readiness and field battlemechs that would not be out of place in first-line regiments anywhere in the Inner Sphere. My initial impression of pilot quality and training is very favorable; both 'mech handling and gunnery in the two units is uniformly good and tactical proficiency shown by line officers and senior NCOs is high.

I am acclimating myself to the local customs and working to develop bonds of trust and friendship with the OWA mechwarriors. They seem friendly enough and have demonstrated a capacity for partying that is frankly amazing. As a mater of fact, the first field exercise I was invited to join with them was initiated at 3 A.M. local time in the midst of a unit-sponsored party at a local drinking establishment. Within minutes I saw RSOR and G_NOX warriors go from carousing to mounting their battlemechs and conducting a complex combined arms exercise that integrated a local militia infantry unit and some aerospace assets. The exercise was a success and upon returning to barracks, the entire detachment resumed the party - evidently these celebrations typically last 48 hours.

Additional reports forthcoming.

Your president approves this message.

The office of galactic tourism also notes that we have a better parties than all the houses combined + MoC. Upon learning of the tax revenue earned by the ancient commonwealth of colorado, we have decided to legalize all forms of intoxicants. And while our girls arent as classy as the arm-candy girls of the MoC.... well, lets just leave it at "you wont be bringing them home to mom anyways" ;)

Alpheratz, Outworlds Alliance
The Lower Deck Bar
10/16/3062

The Lower Deck was another one of the various dives, brothels, bars and jook-joints that clustered around the edge of the main Outworld Alliance Military base on the outskirts of the Capitol. At first the various drinking and partying spots had blurred into each other, but GDH Crash was finally starting to spot the differences between them and understand the niche that each filled. Obviously all of these establishments were built to cater to OWA mechwarriors seeking booze, drugs and women and were designed to meet those needs while separating the warriors from their extra cash. But the places that the RSOR and G_NOX warriors frequented were at the pinnacle of the trade, leaving other, less successful establishments to serve the needs of the small army of OWA mech-techs plus the various infantry units.

Crash had been pleased to learn that the Lower Deck's special niche was to provide a quieter environment, with wood-paneled rooms, roaring fireplaces in the cold season, private meeting spaces... and bunny-eared waitresses with the cutest butts on Alpheratz, which was definitely saying something. When the elite OWA mech regiments wanted to have meetings in a subdued environment that still featured very nice scenery, the Lower Deck seemed to be the go-to spot.

Today, all of the RSOR and G_NOX line officers, NCOs and veteran pilots were seated around a huge oak table in one of the Lower Decks' best meeting rooms, having a few beers and reviewing holo-footage and gun camera data from various engagements. The current footage was recently-received data from a series of Eridani Light Horse raids on the St. Andre Sector of the Capellan Confederation. The defending battlemechs, mostly from the 4th Tau Ceti Rangers, had put up a very stong fight, repelling the ELH raiding forces in each engagement. Crash wasn't privy to all the Light Horses' communications with Fed Suns HQ, but everything he had heard so far indicated that attrition of Capellan Units was the goal and the heaviest attrition would come from inflicting decisive losses on the Liao Battlemech regiments. Improvement was needed.

Puggs Hunter, a top officer in the Alliance Military and personal confidant of the OWA President, gestured for the playback to pause for a moment, then turned to Crash. "It looks like your boys had the advantage at this point. Why didn't your Drop Commander call for your light 'mechs to stop hitting the enemy resource nodes and have them rejoin to get some backstab shots right here?"

Crash shrugged. "Good question - that's something that was discussed in the after-action reviews back on Fletcher too. In all of these fights except the fourth engagement, the ELH units on the ground had an early edge by getting the first kills and should have had an opportunity to sweep those 4TCR guys out. It's something we are working on."

Puggs nodded, stroking his chin. "You know, your Commanding Officer and the President have been talking and there might be a joint operation in the winds... maybe we need to deploy some of our units together to a rear area and run some exercises?"

Smiling, Crash extended his hand to Puggs for a shake. "Yes sir, that would be excellent!"

Gripping the offered hand firmly, Puggs nodded his agreement then gestured for the rest of the footage to roll. "Let's finish up reviewing this stuff, then get another round of drinks in here. Is it just me or is the dry atmosphere in this room evaporating my beers!?"

General laughter filled the room as the rest of the cockpit footage ran and smiling waitresses brought more beers and food.

Undisclosed Planet
10/20/3062

The planet chosen for the exercise was a dusty agricultural world that had been settled by the followers of a strict religious sect hundreds of years before. Most of the inhabitants traveled by horse and wagon and there wasn't even electricity except in one or two small cities that housed port facilities to export crops off-world.

The peace and quiet was shattered by a swarm of round dropships thundering down out of the predawn skies, kicking up massive clouds of dust and smoke as they settled in a vast wheat field. Almost two battalions of mechs emerged from the dropships, painted in a mix of Outworlds Alliance, Federated Suns and Eridani Light Horse colors. The huge force of mechs broke into two massive columns that stomped away across the countryside in opposite directions.

Each column was led by a small group of Federated Suns hovercraft mounting large speakers. The hovercraft zipped ahead of the columns, zooming past farmhouses and workers in the fields with their speakers blaring:
"This is a Federated Suns Military Exercise, Stay Clear!"
"Present Claims For Property Damage To The Planetary Governor!"
"This is a Federated Suns Military Exercise, Stay Clear!"
"Present Claims For Property Damage To The Planetary Governor!"

Then, elements from the two huge columns of mechs split off and engaged one another. Lasers flashed and cannons rumbled as they skirmished. The terrified farmers hiding in their barns and basements didn't even see that none of the mechs were damaged - periodically as fire was focused on them some of the massive machines would shut down in place, "destroyed" in the simulated battle.

Running fights raged throughout the long day, with the only true casualties several fields of alfalfa and a long row of haystacks that caught fire when they were hit by a burst of practice cannon rounds. Finally all of the mechs stomped off back towards their dropships and parked. As techs swarmed over the massive machines, laughing mechwarriors gathered under a pair of huge tents that had been erected at the center of the field.

In no time support staff broke out coolers full of ice-cold beers and a huge field mess began cooking a meal for the FedSuns, OWA and Light Horse personnel. Good-natured drinking games, a long round of toasts and general tomfoolery passed the time until dinner was ready and then everyone attacked the food with the same gusto they had shown in battle.

As the evening wore on and liquor was added to the flow of beer, clumps of drunken mechwarriors from all three of the allied groups wandered off, talking and laughing under the stars.

At a wooden table borrowed from a nearby farmhouse, the ranking Federated Suns, Outworlds Alliance and Eridani Light Horse officers drank toast after toast, laughing as they shared war stories. Finally, Puggs Hunter, the senior representative of the OWA present, rose to his feet swaying drunkenly at first then steadying himself.

"To our honored allies!" he shouted, then he slammed downed the rest of the whiskey in his glass. The officers seated around the table all raised their glasses as well and emptied them with a cheer.

Smiling, Puggs waited for the men to finish downing their beverages, then raised his hand to gather their attention again. "Before we departed Alpheratz, our esteemed President Naterist summoned me and asked that I be sure to give all of you his warmest regards.... and a gift!"

With that, he made a grand gesture towards a nearby OWA dropship. Everyone turned and watched as a small six-wheeled vehicle emerged from the ship, bright bunting and twinkling lights blinking merrily all over it as it trundled down the ramp and drove to the tent. Loud throbbing music suddenly began blasting from the vehicle as the side of the truck facing the tent slowly levered down and settled against the ground forming a low stage.

The confused officers peered into the open side of the truck for a moment, then cheered lustily as flashing lights came on, revealing a line of imported Capellan Hookers dressed in skimpy outfits. The girls strolled out onto the stage, waving at the shouting men as they launched into a dance routine.

"Now let's Party!" shouted Puggs Hunter.

Operational Report: Federated Suns/Outworlds Alliance/ELH Joint Exercise

Digest: The planned Joint Exercise was successfully conducted on a world provided by the Federated Suns Capellan March Command.

Command and control elements with line mechwarriors from the allied forces conducted simulated battles, including integrated exercises. Leaders from all three forces had the opportunity to work with allied pilots and extensive exchange of tactical ideas, battlemech loadouts and maneuver techniques was completed.

I judge our forces ready for a fully-integrated Sector Assault on the enemy at the next opportunity.

Additional reports forthcoming.

OWA Dropship Ronaine
Nadir Jump Point, Undisclosed System
11/1/3062

GDH Crash had seen his hosts from the Outworlds Alliance RSOR and G_NOX battlemech regiments drunk plenty of times, but this was a new low. The wardroom of the big spherical dropship was filled with pilots, most slumped over in their chairs or leaning against a bulkhead. Empty liquor bottles, some broken, slid gently across the deck every now and then, as the dropship continued flying in lazy circles around the small flotilla of OWA jumships to maintain gravity at about .5g. And as drunk as the OWA warriors were, Crash was pretty close behind.

These elite mech regiments had been planned as the spearhead of a joint Eridani Light Horse/Outworlds Alliance operation against the Capellan Confederation. Accordingly a flotilla of loaded jumpships had arrived at a rendezvous point in Davion Space, waiting for the word to jump into the attack. But when the orders finally came, they were not the ones expected. Conversations between the OWA, ELH and Federated Suns Command revealed a number of concerns about the planned operation, including logistical challenges that needed to be overcome.

Then political events began to rapidly play out that resulted in the Federated Suns launching a major assault against the Tortuga Dominions, while a Draconis Combine fleet traveled the length of the Capellan Confederation to attack the Magistracy of Canopus. At the same time the Federated Suns was handling a hotly-contested House Liao assault on Tikonov, while other forces moved to launch potential raids against both the OWA and Federated Suns.

Ultimately, leadership decided to cancel the planned joint assault in favor of launching spoiling attacks on various opponents instead. To the assembled mechwarriors in the joint fleet, this was a devastating blow. The Eridani Light Horse jumpships departed, heading to launch a raid on the sector that the Tikonov assault had been launched from. The OWA began redeploying it's forces as well, leaving a small fleet of jumpships recharging at an unnamed star somewhere near the Terra System.

Crash felt someone nudge his shoulder and he looked up to see PuggsHunter standing there, a half-empty liter bottle of amber liquid in hand.

Puggs offered the bottle to Crash and after the ELH pilot had taken a good swallow, Puggs motioned for him to follow.

The two men made their way out of the wardroom and stumbled their way up the helical stairs to the bridge deck, leaning against one another drunkenly for support a time or two. They entered the bridge, finding that the dropship crew had caught onto the angry depression that gripped the mechwarriors and clearly had begun drinking themselves.

The dropship Captain, leaning against a navigation holotank in the middle of the bridge, raised his glass in salute to Puggs and Crash as they approached. "Greetings gentlemen."

Puggs nodded in response, taking another long pull from his bottle. "And to you Captain Hoppler. So, what is it you wished to tell me about?"

Hoppler took a sip of his drink, looking thoughtfully over the rim of his glass at Puggs and Crash, as though deciding whether he could say what was on his mind. Finally, he decided. "Well sir, my navigator Blaisdel here" with that, he gestured towards the grizzled crewman standing at the other side of the holo-tank, "learned his craft in a, shall we say less formal organization than the OWA fleet. And as a matter of fact, he has been in this sector before and he brought something to my attention that I thought you should know about."

Puggs arched one eyebrow as he considered exactly what Captain Hoppler had said - Blaisdel had learned Navigation serving aboard a Pirate vessel. But the past was the past and maybe the Outworlds Alliance could benefit from it here in the now. "Go ahead Blaisdel, we're all ears."

The gritty rasp of Blaisdel's voice probably had something to do with the large puckered scar that covered one side of his muscular neck, but everyone on the bridge could hear him just fine. "Well, you see sirs, around ten years ago me 'n some guys I worked with at the time were in this very system, only we was being chased by some ships from Lyran space. They claimed we was pirates or some nonsense like that."

Blaisdel glanced at the faces of the three men around the holo-tank and seeing that none of them were going to interrupt, continued. "So we was in the middle of calculating our next jump when all of a sudden-like a Lyran border patrol ship pops into the jump point and opens fire with everything she got. Well, were were for the high jump for sure, so the cap'n, he orders me to engage the K-F drive and screw the calculations."

With that Blaisdel briefly touched the controls on the holotank. The display shifted and then an image of the New Terra system, in Lyran Space appeared. "So... if ye look at all the charts, New Earth is shown with just one primary. But what most folks don't know is it's really a binary system... two stars, only the partner star burned out gods know how long ago and it's just a brown dwarf now. But it's still there and somehow by blind luck we ended up at a jump point near it that put us awful close to New Terra, only the Steiners had no clue we was there 'cause they only watch the Apogee and Nadir points of the Primary."

Hoppler took over from the Navigator and finished explaining the situation. "Blaisdel recorded the coordinates of this Pirate Jump point sir and looking at the astrogational data I calculate that we could jump in and get onto a trajectory to New Earth with one good burn. If we avoid using the thrusters after that initital burn and just coast in, there's a good chance that the Lyrans wouldn't even detect us until we were almost in orbit."

Looking as though he had suddenly sobered up a little, Puggs Hunter leaned forward, licking his lips. "You know, the HQ of the Lyran Precious Metals Repository is on New Earth... and President Naterist has given me a free hand to engage in operations against any systems that are not in a treaty with the Outworlds Alliance. Begin calculations for the jump, I am going to consult with our tactical team to see if we can plan a little raid!"

A buzz of excitement wiped away the air of depression as the dropship crew began preparations. Crash followed Puggs Hunter from the bridge and back down to the wardroom. Halfway down the steps Puggs began shouting at the top of his voice. "On your feet mechwarriors! Tactical briefing in 15 minutes! We have a mission!"

Operational Report: Outworlds Alliance Active Deployment

Digest: The planned Joint Assault was placed on hold as ordered; OWA forces are currently planning an alternate operation against a non-allied system

RSOR and G_NOX regiments currently planning a strike on a target of economic value; planned attack includes use of a non-conventional jump point followed by a long-freefall trajectory to the target area. Aerospace defenses at the target are judged to be heavy, so units are going to hot-drop from an altitude of 10,000 meters, using internal jumpjets and bolt-on boosters to slow the dropped battlemechs right before landing. Extraction plans for the raiding force appear to be minimal, but the OWA mechwarriors don't seem to be concerned.

Lyran Commonwealth Information News  Broadcast
11/04/3062

Newscaster:  Greeting and welcome to tonight's Lyran Commonwealth Information News. We lead off with a report on the recent raid on New Earth. The Lyran Alliance Military has now confirmed that the raiders were from the Outworlds Alliance and has provided the following statement.

Public Information Officer Lyran Alliance Armed Forces: Citizens, we have confirmed that the recent attempted raid on New Earth was launched by forces controlled by the Outworlds Alliance, attacking from a previously-unreported jump point in the New Earth system. Despite the stealthy and unexpected nature of their attack, Aerospace Defense forces confirm that they destroyed several raider battlemechs who attempted to make combat insertions from high altitude. Those who did manage to make it to the ground were quickly cornered and destroyed by elements of the Skye Rangers of Terra regiment, which was on-planet for secret military exercises. The LAAF remains well-positioned to defend the people and resources of the Lyran Alliance and we are grateful for your support in these endeavors.

Newscaster:  Many thanks to the Public Information Office of the LAAF for making that statement available to our viewers. After the break, we provide coverage of the recent hijacking of a Lyran Post Courier ship on New Earth. The missing ship and the hijackers remain at large; stay tuned for information on how to travel safe!

Operational Report: Outworlds Alliance Active Deployment

Digest: The OWA raid on New Earth encountered extremely heavy resistance resulting in significant losses.

RSOR and G_NOX battlemechs executed a combat drop from 10,000 meters altitude but Lyran aerospace fighters attacked the dropships during the maneuver. None of the dropships suffered critical damage but the drop was badly disrupted, resulting in OWA forces being scattered around the planned DZ. Most of the mechs managed to make it to the rally point, but before they could even proceed to the economic target selected by the detachment commander, they came under heavy attack by Lyran battlemech forces. Large elements of the Skye Rangers of Terra Regiment were on-planet and they launch a series of attacks on the OWA drop zone and rally point.

With their mechs destroyed, dismounted OWA personnel and the ELH liaison officer only managed to escape by seizing a Lyran Post Mail ship at a nearby spaceport. We made it back to our jumpships and have released the Lyran crew.

Additional reports forthcoming.

Nadir Jumpoint, Tikonov System
11/14/3062

GDH Crash pressed his face against the small round porthole of the commercial dropship, looking back at the Outworlds Alliance JumpShips docked at the Tikonov Charging Station. Soon the OWA ships would be finished charging and would jump to the next Fed Suns Charging Station on their long journey back to Alpheratz.

Crash had been in the room when Puggs Hunter, the senior OWA official deployed with the small flotilla received the recall order from Alliance Military High Command. All Outworlds Alliance forces in Federated Suns and Capellan space were ordered to suspend offensive operations and return home as quickly as possible. Puggs didn't explain exactly what was going on, but it was clear that some sort of political change had occurred.

There was a quiet going-away party in the wardroom of the command dropship that involved a lot of drinking, handshaking and a few heartfelt hugs from the RSOR and G_NOX mechwarriors that Crash had gotten to know so well. Finally, the flotilla had arrived at Tikonov and Crash transferred to a commercial ship that would deliver him to the next Eridani Light Horse JumpShip to pass through the system.

Shaking his head sadly, Crash pulled out his mincomp and began typing up his last report to Command.
